ISLAJA

More music - Finnish singer-songwriter Islaja, whose live

performance at Berlin'sClub Transmedialefestival has just

gone online atsamurai.fm.

Islaja, whose real name is Merja Kokkonen, constructs surrealist
soundscapes partly influenced by the aesthetics of Finland's
free-folk movement. Her melancholic vocals are backed by a range
of instruments: guitar, harmonium, melodica, glockenspiel and
miscellaneous percussion, most of which she plays herself.

The arrangements are sparse but psychedelic, ranging from
delicately melodic to resolutely dissonant, and often come
tinged with rock or goth inflections.

Born in 1979, Kokkonen made her debut in 2004 with an acid
folk-tinged collection of 13 songs titledMeritie. She has since
released two more albums on Fonal Records, a Finnish label
known for championing outsider music. 2007's Ulual Yyy, was
received with critical acclaim for its beguiling atmospherics and
sonic textures, and her third long-player was notable for its
shunning of 'folky' signifiers, with electric guitar noise, synthesizers,
pianos and saturated drums edging the music closer to
psych-rock than psych-folk.

While the lyrics of her songs are, being entirely in Finnish,

unfathomable to most of her listeners, the emotional messages

communicated through Kokkonen's singing, speaking and whispering

are completely accessible.

LV SMASH 'N' GRAB HOAX

WWD reports that last Wednesday morning police officers

entered Louis Vuitton's Fifth Avenue flagship to investigate

what appeared to be a break-in ...

The broken glass was in fact part of a window display created

to celebrate the launch of the new Damier Graphite collection.

The concept involved two adjacent windows: one with the bags

in a museum-like glass case with dozens ofsecurity cameras

pointing at it; the other featuring smashed cases, sansbags, and

crisscrossing security lasers.

LOUIS VUITTON GINZA FLAGSHIP

I took a long overdue look at Jean Snow's blog and found

this post about the Louis Vuitton building in Ginza, which was

announced in May. It is due to be completed in autumn 2010.

Louis%20Vuitton%20flagship%20Ginza%20Tokyo.jpg

The building reportedly has four below-ground and 10 above

-ground floors, with LV set to occupy floors one through 10,

and the higher levels devoted to luxury dining.

More pictures can be seen
here. The design is by Dutch

architecture firm UNStudio, who have the following to say

about the design:

Louis%20Vuitton%20flagship%20Ginza%20Tokyo%202.jpg

"The design for the 10 storey (54 meter tall) flagship Louis

Vuitton store in Japan aims to establish an architectural

equivalent of the identity of Louis Vuitton in which classical

and modern qualities are blended ...

The elements that represent the classical values connected to

the Louis Vuitton brand are implicitly present throughout the

design. These elements are to a large extent identical to the

modernity also implicit in the name Louis Vuitton, along with

the value of inventiveness.

The element that moves through all the scale levels of the

design is the leaf shape ... Leaf-shaped openings in the façade

give the building a strong identity ...

The leaf shape can be seen as bearing a connection to the

famous Louis Vuitton monogram."

Louis%20Vuitton%20flagship%20Ginza%20Tokyo%203.jpg

Louis Vuitton has two Jun Aoki-designed stores in Ginza

(one on Namiki Dori and another that occupies one wing

of the Matsuya department store), but neither of these are

"landmark"-style stores in the mould of the Dior, Chanel,

Cartier, Armani, BVLGARI or Hermes flagships.

If you happen to be interested in knowing more about the

rationale behind these gargantuan projects, please take a look

at this article I penned for JC Report on the topic back in April.
